How do I avoid hard drive
crash and maintain the portable / external hard drives? |
| |
|
| |
Hard drives are delicate machines,
they are prone to vibration and shock especially when
they are powered because they are spinning at very
high speed (7200 RPM), vibration and shock can cause
the reading head dip into the magnetic surface, which
may damage the reading head as well as the magnetic
surface (bad sectors). |
| |
|
| |
The golden rule: Do NOT move
the portable external hard drives once they are powered;
and move them only if the power is off. This rule also
applies to the internal hard drives of computers / laptops:
Do NOT move the laptop /computer once the power is on. |

How do I get the best performance
from my ATMT USB 2.0 drive in Windows? |
| |
|
| |
Tips for running USB 2.0 in
Windows
Windows XP added USB 2.0 support with service pack 1
or higher installed. For information on obtaining the
latest service pack visit Microsoft's support web site.
|
| |
|
| |
Windows 2000 has a patch to
support USB 2.0 which can be downloaded through the
Windows Update feature in the operating system. However
service pack 4 for Windows 2000 addresses several issues
that you might experience with USB 2.0, so applying
the service pack may be the best way to gain the maximum
performance from your USB 2.0 drive. Microsoft document
number 319973 describes how to apply the updates.
|
| |
Windows Me does not have native
support for USB 2.0, so you should use the latest drivers
for your USB host adapter. These drivers are provided
by host adapter manufacturer (or motherboard manufacturer
if the USB ports are on the motherboard).

Note :
When the partition on your hard drive is formatted Fat32,
there is a limit to the size of the file you can transfer
onto that partition. That file size limit is 4GB in
Fat32 and 1TB in NTFS. This could be another reason
for receiving error messages when transferring large
files to your ATMT Drive. |

Why does Windows Me as
me for the file “USBNTMAP.SYS”? |
| |
|
| |
Windows Me automatically loads drivers
for your drive. Certain OEM installations of Windows
Me call for the file USBNTMAP.SYS while attempting to
load drivers for the external drive. This file can be
located on the Windows Me installation or recovery CD
in the WIN9X\BASE2.CAB folder. |
|
|
| 7. |
Why does my hard drive report
less capacity than indicated on the drive's label? |
| |
|
| |
Hard drive
manufacturers market drives in terms of decimal (base
10) capacity. In decimal notation, one megabyte (MB)
is equal to 1,000,000 bytes, and one Gigabyte (GB)
is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes.
|
| |
Programs such
as FDISK, system BIOS, and Windows use the binary
(base 2) numbering system. In the binary numbering
system, one megabyte is equal to 1,048,576 bytes,
and one gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes.
|
| |
Simply put, decimal and binary
translates to the same amount of storage capacity. Let's
say you wanted to measure the distance from point A
to point B. The distance from A to B is one kilometer
or .621 miles. It is the same distance, but it is reported
differently due to the measurement.
|
| |
Capacity Calculation
Formula
Decimal capacity / 1,048,576 = Binary MB capacity
Example: A 40 GB hard drive is approximately 40,000,000,000
bytes (40 x 1,000,000,000).
40,000,000,000 / 1,048,576 = 38,162 megabytes
|
| |
In the table below
are examples of approximate numbers that the drive
may report.
Decimal Binary MB Windows
Output:
20 GB 19,073 MB / 18.6 GB
40 GB 38,610 MB / 37.3 GB
60 GB 57,220 MB / 55.8 GB
80 GB 76,293 MB / 74.5 GB
120 GB 114,440 MB / 111.7 GB
160 GB 152,587 MB / 149 GB |

The data transfer is extremely
slow. The speed is comparable to a floppy disk drive? |
| |
|
| |
Make sure your computer supports
USB 2.0. Data transfer speed will be much slower in
the USB 1.1. If your computer does not have USB 2.0,
it is recommended to install a USB 2.0 card into your
computer system.
|
| |
USB 2.0 and 1394 are quick
interfaces, but keep in mind that they are not as fast
as a SATA or ATA interface. Let's compare the maximum
performance of each interface
|
| |
USB 1.1 |
12 Mbits/sec |
USB 2.0 |
480 Mbits/sec |
1394a |
400 Mbits/sec |
1394b |
800 Mbits/sec |
UltraATA 100 |
100 Mbytes/sec |

Why does Windows 98/Windows
Me recognize my ATMT drive but I cannot find my new
drive when I click on My Computer? |
| |
|
| |
All ATMT Drives are formatted NTFS
when shipped off to clients for best performance and
data storage. Windows 98 and Windows Me cannot recognize
NTFS partitions as it is a new filing system introduced
in Windows NT, Windows 2000 and XP. The solution is
to reformat the hard drive in Fat32 in partitions of
32GB. |
|
|
| 11. |
Why does my computer hang
when I boot up with my ATMT Drive connected to my
computer? |
| |
|
| |
On a Windows 98-based computer,
when Universal Serial Bus (USB) legacy support is
enabled in the basic input/output system (BIOS), your
computer may not detect USB devices or may stop responding
(hang) when you start or shut down your computer. |
| |
|
| |
Note: Do not use this workaround
if you are using a USB keyboard, because this will disable
the keyboard during the boot process until Windows starts. |
|
|
| 12. |
Why my External HD is not
recognized? Is the drive running? |
| |
|
| |
- The blue light on the front of
the drive should flicker on and off before illuminating,
and you should be able to feel the hum of the drive
when you place your hand on it. In addition, the
green light on the power adapter should be lit.
|
| |
- Make sure all power connectors
on the drive and power adapter are securely plugged
in. If the drive is plugged into a power strip,
try plugging it directly into the wall outlet
|

If No |
| |
Can you connect other Devices to
your computers Usb/Firewire host adapter? |
| |
Does this solve
your problem? |
| |
If No |
| |
- Check if your FireWire or USB
interface card is recognized and working properly
in the Device Manager.
- From Device Manger, double-click
the entry for 1394 Bus Controller or Universal Serial
Bus Controller (which ever interface you're using)
- If there is a yellow "!" exclamation
mark next to any of the entries then the interface
card is not installed properly. Consult the documentation
that came with the card or contact the card manufacturer
- Note : Note If the host controller
is not seen in device manager then it is probably
disabled in the computer BIOS.
- If the host controller is in
'other devices' then additional drivers are required
for the host, check with the PCI card vendor or
motherboard vendor for the appropriate drivers.
USB 2.0 controllers usually require a service pack
to operate properly. Windows XP added support for
USB 2.0 in Service pack 1 and Windows 2000 added
USB 2.0 support in service pack 3 and improved the
support in service pack 4.

| |
|
|
Windows 98SE/Windows Me
|
Windows 2000/XP
|
|
|
| |
If Windows 98SE/Windows Me |
| |
Have you installed the Windows 98
drivers for the external hard drive? |
| |
If No - |
| |
Windows 98SE requires additional
drivers if you are running the drive through the USB
connection. Download the drivers from or alternatively
you can find them on the CD supplied with the product:
Microsoft has provided the "Storage
Supplement Update" on "Windows Update" website, This
patch file can let IEEE 1394 devices work more stable
and can be removed safely from the Windows 98SE system.
Windows Me does not require any additional drivers
to be installed. |
| |
|
| |
Does this solve
your problem? |
| |
If No - You might see that
Windows 98SE / Windows Me finds and installs drivers
for the external hard drive but does not Show the drive
when clicking onto My Computer.
|
| |
Reason :
All ATMT Drives are formatted
NTFS for best performance and data storage. As a result
Windows 98SE and Windows Me do not recognize this format.
|
| |
Solution :
Reformat the ATMT Drive as
Fat32 .You might need 3dre party software to accomplish
this task or alternatively connect it to a Windows
2000 or XP machine to reformat the ATMT drive in
disk management.
*Note
Windows FAT 32 has a 4 GB file size
limit and has a partition limit of 32GB.
To make use of all available
space on the drive divide the hard drive into partitions
of 32GB |
| |
Does this solve
your problem? |
| |
If No -
Try
assigning your drive a higher drive letter
E.g. \x: \y:
\z:
|
| |
Reason :
Windows sometimes assigns incorrect
drive letters for your hard drives as well as loosing
drive letters when there are many partition or drives
on your computer |

Does the 363N Network HDD GUI setup window not appear after
you type “storage” on the browser?
|
| |
|
| |
You need to change your
IP
1-1) Enter into the dos command prompt. Type
“ipconfig /renew” to verify your IP address if you
use Windows 98 or above. |
| |
1-2)
Or release your original IP via “winipcfg” command
when using Windows 98
Go back to the browser, press “storage” to enter into
GUI setup window
|
|
|
| 14. |
How
to configure your Network HDD 363N while your system
is under static IP? |
| |
|
| |
1-1) Obtain IP,
Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS Data from operating system
using the “ipconfig” command for Windows 2000/XP or
“winipcfg” for Windows 98.
1-2) Reconfigure
your PC as auto IP by obtaining an IP address automatically.
1-3) Connect your
PC and Network HDD.
1-4) Setup your network
HDD as Static IP via the GUI window. Type “http://storage”
in the browser for the GUI window to appear.
1-5) Change your
PC`s IP Back to previous settings.
1-6) Connect your system back
to the LAN |
|
|
| 15. |
When my Network HDD 363N is
left powered on and connected to my network, problems
occur when I switch my PC on. My IP configuration are
incorrect, they where for instance 192.168.x.x but are
now 169.254.x.x.? |
| |
|
| |
The reason for this is that your
PC is configured to obtain IP address from the DHCP
server. If you have already have a DHCP server on
your network it is advised to switch the DHCP server
off on the network HDD 363N as this will solve IP
configuration errors. The 363N Network HDD by default
has the DHCP server enabled and allocates an IP address
range from 169.254.x.x. |

I cannot get my mp3 player
to connect with my computer ? |
| |
|
| |
Depending on the type of player
you have or depending on what operating system you are
using, you will need to install USB drivers from the
installation CD. Please ensure you read the manual thoroughly.
For USB drive mp3 players like the ATMT Lite 256MB you
won't need USB drivers unless you are using Windows
98. To achieve connection first time please see the
instructions below:
|
| |
1. Install the supplied software
from the supplied CD by double clicking on the Setup.exe
file found on the CD in the PC Tools Folder. The CD
supplied installs drivers for windows 98 users and
software for encrypting data and firmware upgrades
in the future.
2. For XP, 2000 and ME users, you
do not need to install the software as windows has
the required drivers
3. For Windows 98 users, once you
have finished installing the supplied software, you
will need to reboot your PC in order for Windows 98
to recognize the MP3 player.
4. Turn on your MP3 player
5. Connect the USB cable to your
USB port
6. Connect you're switched on
MP3 player to the other end of the USB cable.
7. Once connected,
the screen on the mp3 player will display a picture
of a MP3 Player and monitor connecting. Windows will
recognize the device as a “removable disk”. You will
be able to see your new MP3 Players disk in “My Computer”
window |
|
|
| 17. |
My WMA (windows media audio)
files will not play on my MP3 player ? |
| |
|
| |
Depending on which program you
used to "Rip" (see our Guide to ripping" your CD collection
there will be an option to enable or disable DRM (digital
rights management) or PRM (personal rights management).
You will need this option disable BEFORE you rip your
CD's. If you rip your CD's with this option activated
your WMA files will not play. There is no way to disable
this option once you have ripped your CD's. |

I am using Windows XP and
during the installation procedure XP says the device
has not been approved my Microsoft. Do I continue
or abort the installation? |
| |
|

This is nothing to worry about.
Please continue with the installation and it will
not affect the stability of your PC or cause it harm. |
|
|
| 19. |
How do I convert my CD
collection into MP3 format? |
| |
|
| |
Please see our "ripping guide" for this information. |
|
|
| 20. |
Despite all of my efforts
I am unable to get my MP3 player talking to my computer,
what can I do? |
| |
|
| |
If at all possible please try installing
the software on a different computer. Computers are
so popular today that most people know somebody with
a computer. This will help eliminate your player or
computer from the equation. Also when the MP3 Player
is connected to the PC a display should show, on the
screen on the MP3 Player, of a MP3 Player connecting
to a Monitor. This indicates the MP3 Player is working.
If however the screen just displays “Initializing”
or “Starting” the MP3 player may need to be replaced. |
|
|
| 21. |
Your website states the
battery will give 10hours of playback but I am only
getting 5-6 hours, why is this? |
| |
|
| |
Manufacturers' battery life quotes
are based on perfect playing conditions. They are
able to achieve 10 hours playback by turning the player
on, setting the volume at a mid range, selecting repeat
all, pressing play and leaving the player to play
with not human interference. As soon as you start
pumping up the volume, skipping tracks and turning
the player on and off the battery life is reduced. |
| |
|
| |
Please note: Batteries supplied
with the Mp3 Player are only good enough for a 1 hours
of playback as they are given to get you started on
the MP3 player. |
|
|
| 22. |
My MP3 player sometimes
freezes during playback of certain files. I have to
remove the battery to restart the player, why is this? |
| |
|
| |
If the files have been downloaded
from the internet there is a chance they will be corrupt
and this is why your player is freezing up to. They
may play perfectly well on your computer but not on
your player. To confirm if it's the files that are
the problem convert one of your CD's (see
our ripping guide) to MP3 or WMA and download
them onto the player. If they play perfectly well
then the problem lies with your downloaded files and
not the player. |
|
|
| 23. |
I have transferred my files
onto the MP3 player and they show up on the removable
disk in “My Computer” but they won't play on my player.
Why is this? |
| |
|
| |
You need to make sure you have
converted the files into digital format. If you have
just transferred the files from a standard audio CD
they will not play on your player. Please see our
"ripping
guide" for information on how convert your music. |
|
|
| 24. |
How many hours playback
can I get on my MP3 player? |
| |
|
| |
If you've been wondering how
all those MBs and GBs stack up when it comes to storing
music, you're not alone — it's a common question. "MB"
is the abbreviation for megabyte: it's a unit for measuring
data. "GB" is the abbreviation for gigabyte, which is
a larger measurement of data. There are 1024 megabytes
in a single gigabyte. |
| |
|
| |
So how much music can a given
player store? The basic rule of thumb is "one megabyte
holds one minute." That is, for every megabyte of memory,
you can store about a minute of compressed music at
near-CD quality. To help you compare specs when you
start shopping, here's a quick peek at some typical
player capacities, and how music and megabytes match
up:
| Storage
capacity |
Hours of
Mp3 music at near CD sound quality(bitrate of
128 kbps) |
128 MB |
2 hrs |
256 MB |
4 hrs |
|
66 hrs |
20GB |
333 hours |
40GB |
666 hours |
| |
|
|
| |
In the chart above, our numbers
are based on a bitrate of 128Kbps. Some folks store
more music per megabyte by encoding their music at
a lower bitrate . Although certain codecs claim better sound quality
at lower bitrates, generally the more compression
you use, the lower the sound quality. Consider encoding
files at lower bitrates for applications such as audio
books, where sound quality is less critical. |

I have created an encrypted
partition on my MP3 player using the MP3 Player Disk
Tool and transferred data to it however when I reconnect
the Mp3 player I cannot see the data I have downloaded
only the file named “RdiskDecrypt.exe”.(or) I have
created an encrypted partition on my MP3 player using
the MP3 Player Disk Tool and cannot transferred data
to the encrypted partition. Why is this? |
| |
|
| |
This is part of the security feature
for protecting your data. The encrypted partition
hides your data away until you have validated who
you are. In order for your data to be seen again double
click on the RdiskDecrypt.exe file and enter the same
username and password used when you created the encrypted
partition. Once the correct username and password
have been entered the data will appear on the encrypted
partition and you will be able to download and delete
data from the MP3 player. |

Does HV355 support WMV and WMA format files? |
| |
|
| |
HV355 does not support WMV and WMA format files. You will need to transfer them to other file formats supported by HV355. |
|
|
| 27. |
Why HV355 cannot display certain folder? |
| |
|
| |
HV355 will filter and hide some certain files and folders such as: system files and folders, hidden files and folders, compressed or password protected files and folders (Windows will show these types of files with blue colour fonts). |
|
|
| 28. |
Why HV355 cannot detect my hard disk? |
| |
|
| |
Please make sure the jumper setting of your HDD is set to MASTER, and the file system of your hard disk is NTFS or FAT32. If the file system of your hard disk is not NTFS or FAT32, the message [ERROR CODE : 04] will be shown on the screen. |
|
|
| 29. |
What media file formats does HV355 NOT support? |
| |
|
| |
The file formats not supported by HV355 include OGG, OGM, ASF, WMV, WMA, MP4, MOV, RMVB, MKV, MKA, and 3GPP. |
|
|
| 30. |
When playing video files with HV355, the screen sticks on a specific frame of some file and unable to execute further operations. |
| |
|
| |
If this phenomenon happened each time on the very same section, it is probably caused by bad sectors on the HDD. Please connect the HDD to a computer to check and repair this file. When playing files with bad sectors, “SKIP BAD SECTOR” will be shown on the screen and go on playing by skipping bad sectors. If a folder with bad sectors occurred, it will stop playing and display”FATAL ERROR 05” on screen. |
|
|
| 31. |
After watching a series of films to a break, it starts from the beginning of the series in the next time access. Does HV355 have some “memory” to continue playing from the point of break? |
| |
|
| |
No. If you play the folder directly, HV355 will play from the beginning of the first file, provided a series of films are placed within one folder. You may enter the folder and pick up the file right after the break next time you want to continue this series. |
|
|
| 32. |
While connecting component video output connector between HV355 and TV, the audio is not functioning. |
| |
|
| |
The Connecting component video output connector exports only video signals. You will have to connect audio connector for the audio to be functioning. Please refer to User’s Manual for detailed instructions. |
|
|
| 33. |
When playing a WAV audio file with HV355, it sounds like fast forwarding. |
| |
|
| |
It is because a mono WAV file will be recognized as a stereo audio file by HV335. Thus HV335 plays it in double speed. Files of this kind will be shown in File NAVI as Question Mark Icons. Transferring this file to MP3 or stereo WAV file should solve this problem. |
|
|
| 34. |
Does HV355 support DIVX DRM (Digital Rights Management)? |
| |
|
| |
Yes. HV355 does support DIVX DRM. |
|
|
| 35. |
While playing movies on HV355, the subtitle of the DIVX movie is not working. |
| |
|
| |
